Grading / Drainage Plan

Background:

The local authority, London Borough of Hillingdon, had a maintenance and safety issue with some of their football pitches which had settled out and were therefore uneven and badly draining. A cost effective solution for the pitches needed to be found. As a former landfill site, cutting into the ground was not advised by the Environment Agency so another solution had to be found.

SPDB Ltd were instructed by the operators (Cornerstone) to come up with a solution and as the levels needed to be raised to achieve the desired drainage, soil importation was to form part of the scheme. As a result of this design solution a considerable amount of the costs involved with re establishing high specification pitches for the council is to be offset through royalty receipts from soil import.

Process

Sports Pitch Design Build Ltd was employed by the operators of the football fields to design a drainage and re profiling scheme that would solve this safety and maintenance issue. The design involves lifting the pitch profiles by 0.5m to 2m (with imported clean soils) and grading them in such a manner as to create the necessary falls and invert levels to allow fast efficient shedding and / or drainage of rainwater from the pitches.

Following subgrade and drainage installation the pitches are to be levelled (1% fall) and sand ameliorated topsoil is to installed to Sport England recommendations.
Two senior pitches have been designated for sand slitting/capping which will have a 100mm sand carpet introduced over them.

As part of the comprehensive subsurface drainage system beneath the pitches a hydrological design was established so as to avoid surface water flood risk and also feed an irrigation lagoon as part of a water harvesting scheme for pitch irrigation / maintenance.      

Completion of Project:

The proposal went into planning March 2013 and determination is pending.
